The Walled Garden
Reviving The Walled Garden
The Walled Garden and the Walled Garden Volunteer Project
The Walled Garden at Luton Hoo Estate was designed by Capability Brown in the late 1760’s for John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute, noted Botanist and Prime Minister under George III.
The Garden changed and evolved under owners and management to match the fashion of horticulture in the 19th and 20th centuries, with each owner leaving their mark on the garden’s rich history.

Garden Volunteers
Gardeners
Under the guidance of our Head Gardener gardeners convene at the Walled Garden each week throughout the year to maintain existing beds and planting, undertake the seasonal tasks incumbent with a Walled Garden, breathe life back into wider areas of the garden, utilise our historic potting shed and propagation houses, and ensure the ever-changing garden provides new areas of interest alongside its existing beauty each year.
Research Volunteers
The Research Group
Underpinning the physical work in the garden is an active research programme, primarily focused on the Luton Hoo Estate in the 20th Century. Within the group members prepare to provide the much-loved historic tours that complement visits to the Walled Garden. Each year the tour is reviewed and updated to bring it in line with the most current research undertaken by the group.
Education Volunteers
The Education Group
The Education Group at the Walled Garden Project provides a valuable first point of contact for our younger future gardeners. The group devise, prepare and deliver all child friendly activities on our various open days throughout the year.
